Asset Dynamics

Introduction to Asset Dynamics

Society invests heavily in complex systems that help us in our daily needs. We depend on these systems. Consider transportation systems, infrastructure, computers, networks, power plants, factories, etc. Typically, these systems are characterized by high investments, long life cycles, complexity, uncertainty about the future use and future conditions in which these systems have to operate.

Asset Dynamics focuses on physical assets and the (changing) context in which those assets operate. Assets are complex, capital-intensive systems that are driven by people, like industrial plants, factories, buildings, utilities, transportation systems.
Typical behavior of assets:
– Assets degrade over time if they are not maintained sufficiently
– Assets have a finite useful life
– Assets are designed according to a particular functional need- The functional requirement, including the conditions in which operates the asset, may change over time
